This project concerns the design of small-scale low-cost housing for sale to the general public as part of the fund-raising and social enterprise remit of Kids Under Cover. The brief included one and two bedroom options with an integrated kitchen dining and living space to allow for independent living. The dwelling is intended as a low-cost and environmentally sustainable solution using flat-packed construction techniques. The design incorporates the use of Durrapanel in a modularised format to minimise wastage and allow for construction on a range of sites, regardless of access, without resorting to the use of cranes. The internal volume is configured to provides a space that invites the occupant to linger there, engages with views to the outside, and creates a space that welcomes visitors - all of which is critical to small footprint dwelling.

NestD have now introduced this design - called ‘The Gable’ - as part of their suite of small studio and houses which can be viewed on their web site: www.nestd.com.au. Negotiations for a new exhibition prototypes are currently underway with prospective fabricators including Ortech Industries who manufacture out of Bendigo.
